How does the Range Extender work on BMW i?
Extends driving pleasure: the optional Range Extender is located next to the electric motor in the rear of the BMW i3 and can increase the range of the BMW i3 in COMFORT Mode from up to 125 miles to a total of 205 miles.
The small and quiet two-cylinder petrol engine powers a generator that maintains the charge level of the high-voltage battery at a constant level so that the BMW i3 can continue to drive purely electrically. The Range Extender switches on automatically when the battery level is low.
The range extender will kick in automatically when there is 20 miles of range left.
Additionally, the range extender can be selected through the ID sytem at 75% charge and below.
